What is Eczema?A skin condition that causes areas of the skin to become red, itchy and scaly. There are many different causes of eczema and it is known to affect different parts of the body.
Fact:
Eczema is the most common skin irritation found during pregnancy and accounts for between a third and a half of all pregnancy skin irritation cases .
Fact :
Only 20-40% of eczema cases are estimated to have had a pre-existing history, often mums-to-be experience the discomfort of eczema for the first time during pregnancy1.
Statistics for newborns:
On average 1 in six babies currently suffer from eczema however there is an increasing chance that new born babies will also develop eczema, if one parent has eczema, asthma or hayfever then there is a 1:4 chance that your baby could develop it, with this doubling to 1:2 if both parents are suffers .
Did you know?

Persil Non-Bio has some top tips for mums and infants on soothing eczema:
Tips on treating eczema when pregnant:
• Avoid hot water. When bathing make sure the water doesn’t feel too hot or redden the skin, as hot water dries skin. Dry, irritated skin can cause a flare-up or worsen existing eczema.
• Reduce stress. Decreasing stress can be a challenge, especially with the anticipation of a baby. However, finding ways to unwind are essential during pregnancy as stress can aggravate eczema.
• Use the right detergent. An effective yet gentle washing formula such as Persil Non-Bio is essential when washing your clothes and bed linen. Persil Non-Bio is strong enough to remove dirt, grime and germs, but does not contain enzymes.
• Opt for cotton. When choosing clothing fabric, opt for cotton based material and other fabrics that feel smooth to the touch, as they usually make skin feel better.
• Drink lots of water. Make sure that you consume healthy meals and drink lots of water to keep the impurities flushed out of your body and help to keep your immune system in tip-top shape.
Tips for babies’ skin:
• Keep skin moisturised. Make sure you moisturise baby’s skin regularly, as this is one of the most effective ways of treating dry skin. You should aim to apply a moisturising lotion 3-5 times a day.
• Go non bio. Choose a non bio washing formula such as Persil Non-Bio when washing your little ones clothes. Persil Non-Bio doesn’t contain enzymes and is designed to leave clothes kind to skin.
• Limit bath time. By reducing bath time to two to three times a week, you will help keep the skin moist. Also make sure you use a mild soap and avoid anything with perfumes or dyes.
• Softly does it. Always pat skin dry, don’t rub. This will help reduce irritation.
• Allow your baby's skin to breathe. Help your baby from becoming too overheated by dressing them in smooth natural fabrics, like cotton. Avoid wool and other scratchy materials next to his sensitive skin.
Persil Non-Bio is available at all leading supermarkets in 5 formats: Liquigels, powder, tablets, capsules and Small & Mighty concentrated liquids and is effective to use on a 30 degree wash.
