Top Ten Tips for Staying Free of Flu
1. Stay healthy – Eat well, sleep well and stay hydrated. Avoid excessive stress, maintain a healthy lifestyle and exercise. 2. Boost your immune system – Take supplements that are proven immune boosters. Don’t wait to get ill, protect yourself with Immulina – the latest and most powerful natural immune booster on the market with respect to macrophage activation. Available at www.immunlina.co.uk and 0207 720 8338 or at Nutri Centre. 3. Cleanliness is next to Godliness - Maintain cleanliness, carry disinfectant for your hands and remember not to touch your face. 4. A clean environment is as good as a clean person - The flu virus can be passed from person to person by coughing or sneezing but it can also be passed by touching and an object, such as a door handle, which has the virus on it. Clean hard surfaces frequently using a normal cleaning product. 5. Avoid people who are infected - This does not mean you need to get out the gas mask every time somebody sneezes but if somebody you know is infected you can help them without getting yourself ill. 6. Settle down while the virus is at its peak - Avoid excessive exposure to clubs and bars and other places where drinking and/or smoking weaken your immune system and expose you to greater risk of infection. 7. Plan ahead - Stay away from public transport as much as possible and avoid unnecessary travel, especially during rush hours! 8. Keep your office and home well ventilated – This will minimise exposure to airborne viruses that may be coming from workmates/family. 9. Tell them not to be a hero - Persuade ill colleagues to stay at home if they suspect they are infected as coming in could see the whole office out of action. 10. Put social graces aside - Do the dainty ‘air kiss’ greeting instead and make sure you have antibacterial gel nearby if you need to shake hands

Globetrotting Gemma joins Ashdown Park
Following a 10-year career that has taken her around the world, Gemma Mitchell has put down roots in the Sussex countryside and become Events Office Manager at Ashdown Park, the luxury hotel at Wych Cross, near Forest Row. It is the latest stage of a high-flying and globetrotting career in the hospitality and events industry that has taken her to America and throughout Europe. Gemma, who originally graduated from the University of London with a zoology degree, decided to embark on a different profession after being elected Student Union Welfare Officer and taking a one-year sabbatical after her studies. “I did some event management for students and that gave me a taste for it,” said Gemma. “I then spent six months working for an event company, which included organising events at the Barbican, and then in 1999 I got a lucky break and was offered a job at the London Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square as an events assistant, even though I had no hotel experience.” In 2001 Gemma was given the opportunity to transfer to the 1,000-room Marriott in Boston, where she worked as a meeting concierge and events assistant. “I jumped at the chance and it was a fantastic experience even though it was very stressful at times,” said Gemma. “As meeting concierge I had to set up meeting rooms, check everything was in place and liaise with event organisers throughout their stay. They were given a phone hotline number to call if they needed anything, and I was the person at the end of the phone.” Gemma returned from America to join the newly opened Marriott Druids Glen Hotel & Country Club in Ireland and was then promoted to the position of Event Manager at the five-star Renaissance Chancery Court in London. During her time there Gemma and a colleague were jointly awarded the company’s Golden Circle award for generating the highest annual volume of wedding business, and were rewarded with a trip to Aruba. “I loved the job but decided I wanted to see the event industry from a client’s perspective and joined a Brighton company, Facilitate, which specialises in organising events for medical pharmaceutical companies,” she said. “During my time there I went back to America and travelled all around Europe, before deciding I wanted a new challenge and also wanted to move back in the hotel world.” Gemma, who lives in Brighton, is now in charge of a team of four at Ashdown Park, overseeing all aspects of event management and also getting involved in managing individual corporate events. Outside work she is a food and wine enthusiast and enjoys going to wine tasting sessions with her husband, who she met while he was working as a chef. “I had a fantastic time travelling but it’s now good to settle in one place and I was delighted to be offered the position at Ashdown Park,” she said.
